23 Day Borneo Itinerary

  • Welcome to Malaysia! Arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to your hotel in the city centre. The drive takes approximately one hour, gradually shifting from the airport’s modern outskirts to the lively heart of Malaysia’s capital.

Kuala Lumpur is a dynamic and multicultural city, known for its dramatic skyline, vibrant street food, and diverse neighbourhoods. Towering skyscrapers like the iconic Petronas Twin Towers rise above a mix of colonial-era buildings, Chinese shopfronts, colourful Hindu temples, and modern shopping malls. First-time visitors are often struck by how seamlessly the city blends tradition and innovation, with bustling markets just steps from luxury hotels and contemporary art galleries.

After check-in, the remainder of the day is at your leisure. Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to take a short walk to explore the nearby area, sample local snacks from a hawker stall, or simply relax and enjoy the comfort of your hotel. Overnight in Kuala Lumpur.

  • Start your day with an engaging cycling tour that offers a street level view of Kuala Lumpur’s lively neighbourhoods and hidden corners. This experience introduces a different side of the city, away from highways and busy boulevards, giving you the chance to explore where cars cannot go. Make your way to the starting point in central Kuala Lumpur, where you will meet your guide and receive a safety briefing and orientation.

You will be riding full sized Dutch style bicycles, ideal for a comfortable urban ride. The route takes you through some of the most atmospheric backstreets and kampung style neighbourhoods still surviving in the city’s historic core. As you cycle, you’ll see how KL’s urban landscape blends the old and the new, with glimpses of wooden stilt houses and narrow alleyways, and the gleaming Petronas Towers often visible in the distance.

Stops along the way include a bustling local market where vendors sell tropical fruit and daily essentials, a walk through Chinatown, and a visit to Dataran Merdeka, the site of Malaysia’s declaration of independence and home to striking colonial era buildings. You will also visit several places of worship such as a mosque, a Hindu temple, or a Chinese temple, providing insight into Malaysia’s rich religious and cultural mix. Please note that shoes must be removed before entering any temple or mosque as a sign of respect.

A light local lunch will be included at a neighbourhood restaurant, giving you the chance to taste some Malaysian favourites and take a break. After approximately four hours, the ride concludes back at MikeBikes’ office. From there, you are free to return to your hotel at your own pace or continue exploring nearby areas such as Central Market, KL Tower, or the riverside walk.

If you would prefer not to cycle, this experience can easily be adapted into a guided walking tour, covering similar neighbourhoods and cultural sites on foot. Simply let us know if you would like to switch formats.

  • After breakfast, check out from your hotel in Kuala Lumpur. A private driver will meet you at your accommodation and transfer you to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Depending on your flight, the journey will take you to either KLIA or KLIA2. The airport is located approximately 50 to 70 kilometres from the city centre, with travel times ranging between 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Upon arrival at Kuching Airport in the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo, you will be met by a local driver and transferred to your hotel in the heart of the city. The drive into town typically takes 15 to 30 minutes, covering a distance of around 10 to 20 kilometres. As you leave the airport behind, the road gradually gives way to glimpses of tropical greenery, suburban districts, and eventually the city’s colonial core along the Sarawak River.

Kuching is Sarawak’s capital and largest city, yet it retains a quiet, low-rise charm. It is often regarded as one of Malaysia’s most liveable cities, with a unique cultural mix that includes Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Dayak communities. The city’s name means ‘cat’ in Malay, and you will notice playful feline statues scattered throughout town. Kuching is also known for its vibrant food scene, historic architecture, and riverside setting.

The rest of the day is free at leisure. You might take a gentle walk along the waterfront promenade, which stretches past food stalls, colonial buildings, and local shops. In the late afternoon, the esplanade becomes a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike to catch the sunset over the water. If time allows, you could stop by the nearby Main Bazaar, known for its antiques, handicrafts, and Sarawak pepper. Alternatively, you may choose to relax at your hotel and enjoy the slower rhythm of this culturally rich and laid-back city.

  • Begin your day with an excursion into the wild landscapes of Sarawak as you visit Bako National Park, the oldest and one of the most ecologically diverse national parks in Malaysia. You will be picked up from your hotel in Kuching in the morning and transferred by car to Bako Village, located about 35 kilometres north of the city. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes and travels through suburban neighbourhoods and countryside, offering glimpses of village life along the way.

Upon reaching Bako Village, you will board a small local boat for a scenic twenty minute journey across the Santubong River estuary to reach the park. As Bako is located on a remote peninsula accessible only by boat, this part of the trip sets the tone for a day immersed in nature. Depending on tides and weather conditions, landings can be on the beach rather than at a jetty, so be prepared for a little adventure as you arrive.

Bako National Park may be the smallest in Malaysia by size, but it offers an impressive range of biodiversity packed into its borders. The park contains nearly every type of vegetation found in Borneo, from lush dipterocarp rainforest and tangled mangroves to swamp forest, cliff vegetation, and tropical heath forest known locally as kerangas. This variety of ecosystems supports an equally wide range of wildlife. While sightings cannot be guaranteed, Bako is one of the best places in Sarawak to observe animals in their natural habitat.

Keep an eye out for the distinctive proboscis monkeys, found only on Borneo and recognisable by their large noses and potbellies. You may also spot long tailed macaques, silver leaf monkeys, bearded pigs, monitor lizards, and an array of birdlife. The park’s plant life is just as fascinating, including several species of carnivorous pitcher plants and bright fungi clinging to fallen logs and tree trunks.

With your guide, follow one of Bako’s well established trails. These range from easy coastal walks to more demanding jungle treks. Most paths feature a mix of wooden boardwalks, stepped sections, and uneven forest floors with exposed roots and rocks. Your guide will choose a route suited to your fitness level and interests, pointing out wildlife and explaining the ecological importance of what you see along the way.

After your time in the park, return to Kuching in the late afternoon by boat and car. We recommend dressing in loose, light clothing and wearing comfortable closed toed walking or hiking shoes. Bring a hat, sunblock, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and a lightweight raincoat. If you have one, a torch or flashlight is useful for shaded trails or spotting animals in low light.

This day trip offers a close up look at Sarawak’s remarkable natural environment and is ideal for travellers with an interest in wildlife, conservation, and tropical ecology.

  • After breakfast at your hotel in Kuching, meet your driver for the two-hour journey to Kampung Sadir, a rural highland village in the Padawan region of Sarawak. The drive takes you through winding roads, forested foothills, and traditional farmlands, gradually revealing a different side of Borneo. As the city gives way to the countryside, you'll pass pepper gardens, rice terraces, and small roadside stalls selling seasonal produce.

Upon arrival in Kampung Sadir, you will be welcomed into Saloma's Village Stay, an authentic Bidayuh experience. Hosted by a local family, this intimate guesthouse offers a meaningful connection to Bidayuh culture and daily life. After a short orientation, enjoy a home-cooked lunch made with organic produce grown on the family’s farm, followed by time to check into your room and relax.

In the afternoon, your host will take you on a guided walk through the village. Visit an authentic Bidayuh longhouse, where extended families once lived communally and still gather for ceremonies and social events. You will also stop by the local boarding school, which serves children from neighbouring villages. Along the way, gain insight into the Bidayuh people’s traditions, agricultural practices, and close ties to the surrounding rainforest.

After a traditional dinner back at the homestay, head out on a short night walk with your host to explore the edge of the jungle. Armed with flashlights, you’ll look for nocturnal wildlife like frogs, stick insects, and forest creatures that become active after dark. The sounds and sights of the rainforest at night offer a completely different perspective of the natural world.

Return to the village and enjoy the rest of your evening at leisure. You may choose to spend time with your hosts, learn more about Bidayuh life, or simply unwind on the balcony, listening to the forest sounds and enjoying the cooler mountain air.

  • After breakfast, set out on a guided walk through the forested hills surrounding Kampung Sadir. Your host from Saloma's Village Stay will accompany you on this one-hour trek, which winds through dense jungle and cultivated farmland. As you walk, you will be introduced to a wide range of native plants, herbs, and wild vegetables traditionally used by the Bidayuh community for food, medicine, and daily living.

Along the way, you will engage in a local tradition known as “jungle shopping,” gathering edible leaves, roots, and seasonal fruits that will later be prepared for lunch. Your host will explain how different forest produce is used in Bidayuh cooking and share stories about the significance of certain plants in Bidayuh life and healing practices. You’ll also pass by small fields planted with rice, tapioca, bananas, pepper vines, and other crops that support both the village’s subsistence and small-scale trade.

At the family’s rustic farmhouse, nestled beside a clear mountain stream, you’ll witness and take part in traditional bamboo cooking. Ingredients gathered from the jungle are steamed or roasted inside freshly cut bamboo tubes, locking in flavour and nutrients. Even the herbal tea, made from jungle herbs, is brewed in bamboo and served in bamboo cups. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a meal prepared using age-old techniques, in a setting far removed from modern kitchens or tourist restaurants.

After your meal, there is time to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. You may wish to cool off with a dip in the nearby stream, where you might spot small fish darting among the rocks. If you’re feeling active, lend a hand with some of the light farm work or chat with your hosts about their lives and traditions. For those who prefer a slower pace, simply rest in the shade and take in the fresh air and bird calls.

In the late afternoon, return to Saloma’s Village Stay. After dinner, head out on a short guided night walk around the edge of the forest. Your host will help you spot insects, frogs, and perhaps even fireflies lighting up the darkness. The walk offers a glimpse into the nocturnal life of the jungle and adds a touch of magic to your stay. Later, you are welcome to unwind with the locals, swap stories, or enjoy a glass of rice wine or beer from the small village shop. The evening is yours to spend as you wish, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

  • After breakfast, lace up your walking shoes for a final jungle trek to one of the hidden gems near Kampung Sadir - a secluded rainforest waterfall known for its cool, clear waters and peaceful surroundings. The walk to the waterfall takes approximately 35 minutes, following a trail that winds through dense forest and alongside gently flowing streams. The terrain is moderate and well-shaded, with occasional muddy or uneven patches that add to the sense of adventure.

As you walk, your host will continue to share insights into the forest’s natural wealth. Learn how the local Bidayuh community identifies and uses wild herbs, medicinal plants, and jungle fruits in their daily lives. Depending on the season, you might spot orchids, colourful fungi, or wildflowers blooming along the path, adding splashes of colour to the green canopy. The soundtrack of the forest - the rustle of leaves, bird calls, and the gentle rush of water - creates a calming atmosphere that’s difficult to find elsewhere.

Upon reaching the waterfall, take time to relax and soak in the natural beauty of the spot. You can enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool mountain pool, sit on the rocks and listen to the cascading water, or simply rest and admire the lush forest scenery. This is an ideal setting to pause, reflect, and connect with nature before your return to city life.

After the visit, begin the trek back to Saloma’s Village Stay, where lunch will be served. Enjoy one last home-cooked Bidayuh meal, featuring ingredients sourced from the farm or nearby forest, before saying farewell to your hosts.

In the early afternoon, you will be transferred back to Kuching by private car. The journey takes around two hours, offering scenic views of rural Sarawak as you descend from the highlands and re-enter the quieter rhythms of city life. The experience at Saloma’s Village Stay is likely to remain one of the most memorable highlights of your journey, offering a rare and meaningful glimpse into Indigenous culture, forest traditions, and warm local hospitality.

  • After breakfast, check out from your hotel in Kuching. You will be collected from your accommodation and transferred by private vehicle to Kuching Airport, a journey of approximately 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. Ensure you have your travel documents ready, as you prepare to leave the capital of Sarawak and head deeper into the natural heart of Borneo.

Today, you will fly to Mulu National Park, one of the most spectacular and ecologically significant protected areas in South East Asia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a masterpiece of nature, formed over more than 60 million years. Mulu is renowned for its limestone karst formations, extensive cave systems, and rich biodiversity. It is a place that continues to captivate researchers, adventurers, and nature lovers alike.

Upon arrival at Mulu Airport, you will be met by a local representative and transferred to your accommodation at Benarat Lodge. After check-in, take some time to settle in and enjoy the rainforest atmosphere before your afternoon adventure begins.

In the afternoon, set off on a guided exploration of Deer and Lang Caves. These two of Mulu’s most accessible and impressive cave systems are reached via a well-maintained boardwalk that stretches through pristine rainforest. The walk from the park headquarters is around 3 kilometres each way, passing through lush jungle teeming with birdlife and butterflies. Your guide will provide insights into the park’s flora, fauna, and geology as you make your way to the caves.

Lang Cave is known for its delicate stalactites and stalagmites, with dramatic lighting that enhances the formations. Deer Cave, one of the largest cave passages in the world, impresses with its vast size and towering caverns. As you exit the caves, continue on to the Bat Observatory platform in the late afternoon to witness a truly mesmerising natural phenomenon. On clear evenings, millions of bats emerge from the cave entrance in spiralling formations to begin their nightly hunt. The sight and sound of this exodus, which can last up to half an hour, is one of Mulu’s most unforgettable experiences. Please note that bat sightings depend on weather conditions and may not occur during heavy rain.

After the tour, return on foot to the park headquarters and transfer back to Benarat Lodge. The evening is at your leisure. You may wish to relax on your veranda, enjoy a meal at the lodge, or simply listen to the sounds of the rainforest as night falls.

  • After breakfast, begin your morning excursion with a scenic longboat ride along the Melinau River, the lifeline of the surrounding rainforest. You will cruise upstream through lush jungle landscapes, flanked by dense vegetation and limestone cliffs, heading toward two of Mulu National Park’s most iconic cave systems: Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. These river caves form part of one of the world’s most extensive underground networks, shaped by the steady flow of water over millions of years.

Along the way, stop at the small Penan settlement of Batu Bungan. The Penan are one of Sarawak’s indigenous communities, traditionally nomadic and deeply connected to the forest. Here, local artisans will display and sell their handmade crafts, including intricate beadwork, woven baskets, and natural fibre products. This short visit offers a respectful glimpse into Penan life and an opportunity to support their community through the purchase of souvenirs.

Continue the journey by longboat to Wind Cave, where a wooden walkway leads you through narrow passages lined with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is named for the constant breeze that flows through its chambers, especially noticeable in the first chamber known as the King’s Room. Next, walk a short trail to Clearwater Cave, one of the longest in Asia. Inside, a subterranean river flows through vast caverns carved into the limestone, creating dramatic rock formations and crystal-clear pools.

After exploring the caves, take a break at a riverside shelter near the mouth of Clearwater Cave. Here, tea or coffee will be served, and if time and weather permit, you may enjoy a refreshing swim in the natural pool fed by the cave’s cool underground stream. Surrounded by rainforest, this is a tranquil and rewarding place to pause before your return journey.

During the dry season, the water level in the Melinau River may be lower, and you may need to assist the boat crew by stepping out and helping to guide the boat across shallow or rocky patches. This adds an extra sense of adventure to the trip and is part of the authentic experience of navigating Mulu’s waterways.

Following your visit to the caves, return by boat to the Mulu Park headquarters, and then continue by road to your lodge. The remainder of the day is at leisure to relax and enjoy the peaceful rainforest surroundings.

  • After breakfast at the lodge, enjoy a day of rest or leisure in the heart of Borneo’s rainforest. With no fixed activities planned, you are free to explore at your own pace or simply relax and take in the peaceful atmosphere of Mulu National Park. The day offers a chance to absorb the natural surroundings, unwind from travel, or continue discovering more of what this remarkable area has to offer.

If you feel like staying close to your accommodation, Benarat Lodge offers a quiet setting with forest views and the calming sounds of nature all around. You might choose to read on the verandah, take short nature walks around the property, or enjoy a cool drink while watching for passing wildlife. Birdwatchers often spot colourful species in the trees nearby, while those looking for a break can simply enjoy the slow rhythm of life in the rainforest.

For those interested in further exploration, you may wish to return to Mulu Park headquarters for additional self-guided walks or short treks on well-marked trails, including the Tree Top Tower, which provides elevated views of the canopy. You can also ask your lodge or park staff about optional guided activities available on the day, such as night walks, canopy walks (if available), or additional cave visits.

Lunch and dinner can be arranged at the lodge’s dining area, where simple local and Malaysian dishes are served in a casual setting. As night falls, enjoy the cooler air and the symphony of forest sounds, from frogs and insects to the distant rustle of leaves in the trees.

  • After breakfast at the lodge, enjoy some time at leisure in the peaceful surrounds of Mulu before your departure. You may wish to take a final short stroll along the trails near your accommodation or simply relax on the verandah and listen to the sounds of the rainforest one last time. This is a good opportunity to reflect on your time spent exploring one of South East Asia’s most important natural areas.

When it is time for your departure, a scheduled transfer will take you from the lodge to Mulu Airport. The short drive offers one final look at the limestone formations and lush greenery that make this remote part of Sarawak so special. From here, you will board your flight to Kota Kinabalu, located in the Malaysian state of Sabah.

Upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, you will be met by a local representative and transferred by private vehicle to your accommodation in the city. The drive from the airport to central Kota Kinabalu typically takes around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Kota Kinabalu, often referred to as KK, is a lively coastal city and the capital of Sabah. Set between the South China Sea and a backdrop of forested hills, the city is known for its laid-back charm, bustling markets, and fresh seafood. It is also the gateway to Kinabalu Park and nearby islands, making it a hub for both culture and nature-based experiences. First-time visitors will find a mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indigenous influences reflected in the city's food, architecture, and daily life. The waterfront area, with its lively evening market and sunset views, is a popular spot to explore.

Check in to Hotel Shangri-La Kota Kinabalu, a comfortable city hotel located conveniently near local markets, dining options, and the waterfront. The rest of the day is free at leisure. Depending on your arrival time and energy levels, you might choose to take a short walk to explore the nearby surroundings or enjoy a quiet evening at the hotel.

  • Today’s journey takes you into the heart of Sabah’s rural landscape with a day tour to the Kiulu countryside, a scenic and culturally rich area located on the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu. After breakfast, meet your guide and driver at your hotel for the 45-minute drive north to Kiulu Valley. Along the way, enjoy views of forested hills, small villages, and winding rivers that hint at the slower pace of life beyond the city. There will be a short stop at the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge, one of Sabah’s most photographed landmarks, as well as a chance to visit a nearby market where locals trade fresh produce and daily necessities.

Upon arrival at the Fig Tree in Kampung Mantob, you’ll receive a warm welcome from your hosts and a briefing on the day’s activities. This is a hands-on experience designed to offer a meaningful introduction to Dusun culture and daily life in rural Sabah. You’ll be invited to try a variety of traditional practices, such as pounding rice with a wooden mortar, learning the techniques of rubber tapping, planting rice in a paddy field (seasonal), and using a blowpipe, a traditional hunting tool still used by some Indigenous communities.

Lunch is a highlight of the day, served in a traditional village style and made with locally sourced ingredients. Dishes may include bamboo-cooked rice, fresh vegetables, grilled fish, and tangy sambals, offering an authentic taste of Sabahan home cooking. After lunch, take a gentle walk through the surrounding village and farmland. You’ll pass by a local primary school, traditional homes, neat rows of paddy fields, and shaded trails that lead to a small suspension bridge spanning the Kiulu River. The route is leisurely and suitable for most fitness levels, offering plenty of opportunities to interact with locals and enjoy the natural beauty of the valley.

Weather permitting, you may also take a refreshing dip in the Kiulu River. Its cool, clear water is fed by nearby mountain streams and offers a wonderful way to unwind before your return to Kota Kinabalu. Bring swimwear and a change of clothes if you plan to swim.

After a full day of cultural discovery and countryside charm, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Kota Kinabalu by late afternoon. This tour provides a unique opportunity to connect with Sabah’s people, landscapes, and traditions in a respectful and engaging way.

  • After breakfast, your driver will collect you from your hotel in Kota Kinabalu for a private transfer to Kota Kinabalu International Airport. The airport is located approximately 8 to 10 kilometres from the city centre, with the drive taking around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions. This transfer is point-to-point and does not include sightseeing stops en route. Please ensure your luggage and travel documents are prepared in advance for a smooth departure.

Upon arrival at Sandakan Airport, located on the east coast of Malaysian Borneo, you will be met by a local driver for the onward transfer to Sepilok. The journey from the airport to Sepilok is approximately 25 kilometres and typically takes around 30 to 40 minutes by car, passing through the outskirts of Sandakan town and stretches of secondary forest and plantation areas.

Sandakan is one of Sabah’s key historical ports and was once the capital of British North Borneo. Today, it is a gateway to some of Borneo’s most important wildlife and conservation areas. Though the town itself is relatively modest in size, it played a major role during World War II and is surrounded by areas of immense natural significance.

Your destination, Sepilok, is internationally renowned for its wildlife sanctuaries and lush rainforest surroundings. It is best known as the home of the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, a pioneering conservation facility that helps orphaned and injured orangutans return to the wild, which you will get a chance to visit in the days ahead. The area is also home to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and several nature trails that provide an immersive experience of Borneo’s lowland rainforest.

Upon arrival at your accommodation, Tanini Sepilok, check in and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Set against a backdrop of green foliage and tropical sounds, this peaceful lodge offers a comfortable base for exploring the natural wonders of Sepilok. You may wish to relax on your balcony, take a stroll in the surrounding gardens, or enjoy the facilities as you settle into your stay in East Sabah.

  • Early in the morning, meet your driver at the hotel for a private transfer to the Sabah Parks Jetty in Sandakan. The drive typically takes around 30 minutes depending on your hotel’s location and traffic conditions. Once at the jetty, board a scheduled speedboat for the crossing to Libaran Island. The boat ride takes approximately one hour and travels across the Sulu Sea, offering open views of the coastline and a refreshing sea breeze. Situated around 40 kilometres north of Sandakan, Libaran Island lies just off the coast of Borneo and is part of a group of islands known for their role in turtle conservation.

Libaran is a designated turtle conservation zone and one of the few places in the world where visitors can observe sea turtles in a responsible and controlled setting. The island provides a vital nesting ground for both green turtles and hawksbill turtles, which come ashore at night to lay their eggs. Unlike the more crowded Selingan (Turtle Island), Libaran receives fewer visitors, creating a quieter and more intimate environment for experiencing this remarkable natural event.

Upon arrival, register at the Sabah Parks office and receive the keys to your lodge accommodation for check-in. The remainder of the afternoon is free to enjoy at your own pace. You might take a stroll along the soft sandy beaches, swim in the shallow waters, or snorkel along the coral reef just offshore. The island’s coastline offers peaceful corners ideal for relaxing with a book or simply soaking up the island atmosphere.

After dinner, remain close to the lodge and await the call from the park rangers. If conditions are suitable and turtle landings are observed that evening (note that sightings are not guaranteed), you will be invited to join a guided observation. With the guidance of the park staff, you may witness a female turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs, see the eggs carefully collected and placed in the protected hatchery, and if timing allows, observe baby hatchlings being released onto the beach to begin their journey to the sea.

These activities are conducted under strict conservation guidelines to protect the welfare of the turtles and ensure the long-term success of the breeding program. Flash photography and direct contact are not permitted. The experience is a rare opportunity to observe a fragile and ancient cycle of life and to learn more about marine conservation efforts in Borneo. Return to your lodge for the night, falling asleep to the gentle sound of waves and the knowledge that you’ve witnessed something truly special.

  • Wake to the gentle sound of waves and enjoy a peaceful breakfast at your lodge on Libaran Island. Today is yours to spend entirely at leisure, with no scheduled activities. This is a perfect opportunity to unwind and absorb the island’s natural beauty at your own pace. Libaran offers a quiet, undeveloped coastline with soft sandy beaches, calm waters, and a relaxed atmosphere far removed from the bustle of the mainland.

You may wish to take a long walk along the shoreline, observe birdlife in the nearby trees, or simply relax with a book under the shade of a palm. The waters around Libaran are clear and inviting, ideal for a refreshing swim or a casual snorkel near the jetty. If you're interested in learning more about the turtle conservation work carried out on the island, staff may be available to provide insights, depending on the day's activity at the hatchery.

For those looking to explore further, you can choose to take an additional excursion by boat to nearby Bakungan Kecil Island. This small uninhabited island offers snorkelling opportunities in coral-filled waters, with plenty of marine life. These activities can typically be arranged locally, subject to weather conditions and availability.

Lunch and dinner will be served at set times on the island. As evening falls, enjoy another quiet night surrounded by nature, with the stars overhead and the sound of the sea carrying through the trees.

  • After breakfast, begin your return journey from Libaran Island to the mainland by boat, arriving at Sabah Parks Jetty in Sandakan. From here, continue overland to one of Borneo’s most iconic wildlife destinations - the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Located on the edge of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, this facility spans 43 square kilometres of protected lowland rainforest and is home to approximately 60 to 80 semi-wild and rehabilitated orangutans. The centre plays a vital role in rescuing and reintroducing orphaned and injured orangutans back into the wild.

Upon arrival, register and watch a short documentary film that outlines the centre’s conservation efforts and the rehabilitation process. Afterwards, follow your guide on a ten-minute walk along raised boardwalks through the tropical rainforest to the main viewing platform. Here, you will witness the morning feeding session at 10:00am as rangers place fruit on feeding platforms and orangutans emerge from the forest canopy. Although sightings are not guaranteed, this is one of the best places in the world to observe these endangered primates in their natural habitat.

Following your visit, meet your driver for the onward journey to Bilit Village on the upper Kinabatangan River. This drive takes approximately two and a half hours, passing through a patchwork of rural villages, vast palm oil plantations, and remnants of wild jungle. Upon arrival at the Bilit jetty, board a small boat for a short river crossing to Nature Lodge Kinabatangan, your base for exploring this biodiverse region.

After checking in and receiving a short orientation briefing, enjoy some time to settle into your lodge accommodation. In the late afternoon, regroup at the main lodge to begin your first river safari. Cruise along the Kinabatangan River as the late afternoon light reflects off the water and the rainforest comes alive with wildlife. Keep your eyes open for proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques, hornbills, crocodiles, and with luck, a wild orangutan or pygmy elephant.

Return to the lodge at dusk for a buffet dinner, served in the communal dining area. Spend the rest of the evening relaxing or listening to the sounds of the jungle that surrounds you. Overnight at Nature Lodge Kinabatangan.

  • Rise early this morning to take advantage of the quiet hours when the jungle is at its most active. At dawn, meet your guide and board a boat for a second river safari on the Kinabatangan River. As the mist begins to lift and the rainforest awakens, this is one of the best times of day to observe wildlife as they forage along the riverbanks before retreating to the cooler shade of the forest canopy.

Cruise slowly along the main river and, depending on water levels and seasonal conditions, explore one of the nearby oxbow lakes or meandering tributaries. These still, reflective waterways are rich in biodiversity and may offer sightings of hornbills, kingfishers, macaques, and if you are lucky, the elusive Bornean pygmy elephant or a wild orangutan. Your local guide will help spot animals and interpret the signs of the rainforest, bringing the jungle to life with their knowledge.

After a rewarding morning on the water, return to the lodge for a well-earned breakfast. The rest of the morning and early afternoon are free for you to relax, reflect, or explore the lodge’s surroundings. You might enjoy a quiet read on your veranda, or a walk along the lodge’s boardwalks to spot smaller creatures and birdlife in the trees nearby.

Later in the day, regroup for another afternoon river safari. As the sun begins its descent, the river takes on a golden hue and the animals become active once again. Glide past towering trees and tangled vines in search of proboscis monkeys settling in for the night, crocodiles lurking near the riverbanks, and colourful birds returning to their nests. The changing light and sounds of the rainforest make this a peaceful and magical time to be on the water.

Return to the lodge at dusk and enjoy dinner in the open-air canteen, sharing stories of the day’s encounters. The evening is yours to relax and take in the sounds of the rainforest under the stars. Overnight at Nature Lodge Kinabatangan.

  • After breakfast at the lodge, check out and board a boat for the short crossing back over the Kinabatangan River to Bilit Jetty. Here, you will meet your driver for the overland journey to Lahad Datu. The drive typically takes 2 to 2.5 hours and passes through a mixture of rural villages, palm oil plantations, and patches of secondary forest, giving you a sense of the region’s geography and land use.

Upon arrival in Lahad Datu, complete your registration for the next leg of your adventure before continuing by four-wheel drive into the heart of Tabin Wildlife Reserve. The drive to Tabin takes approximately 2 hours and offers glimpses of the forested landscapes that make this one of Sabah’s most important conservation areas. Covering over 120,000 hectares, Tabin is Malaysia’s largest wildlife reserve and is home to a rich variety of animals, including wild orangutans, clouded leopards, pygmy elephants, and over 300 species of birds.

On arrival, check in to Tabin Wildlife Resort, your base for the next few days. Time permitting, begin to explore the area with a short guided walk. Learn about the native jungle plants, many of which have long been used in traditional medicine by local communities. Visit the Trogon Hall gallery, which showcases the biodiversity of the reserve and highlights the ongoing conservation efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.

In the afternoon, set out on a trek to the Lipad mud volcano, a unique geological feature that provides important mineral nutrients to wildlife. Climb the observation tower for panoramic views over the surrounding rainforest and observe signs of recent animal activity near the mud pools. The trek back to the lodge follows a well-trodden elephant trail, giving you the chance to see tracks or other signs of these elusive creatures.

After dinner at the resort, enjoy a short presentation on Tabin’s ecosystems and wildlife, offering greater insight into the species and habitats you may encounter. Then, join a guided night safari by vehicle in search of nocturnal wildlife. Keep an eye out for civets, leopard cats, nightjars, flying squirrels, and other creatures that come alive after dark. Return to your lodge for a restful night surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

  • Begin your day at first light with an optional guided bird walk around the grounds of Tabin Wildlife Resort. With over 300 recorded species, Tabin is a birder’s paradise, attracting both avid birdwatchers and casual nature lovers alike. Early mornings are an ideal time to spot hornbills, pittas, broadbills, and other tropical species as they become active with the rising sun. The surrounding forest echoes with calls and songs, creating a memorable start to the day.

Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast before setting out on a wildlife-spotting drive to one of Tabin’s known observation areas. Your guide will help identify signs of animal activity and explain the role of the various species that inhabit this diverse ecosystem. Keep your eyes open for orangutans, macaques, civets, and possibly the rare Bornean pygmy elephant.

Later in the morning, begin a guided trek through the rainforest to reach the serene Lipad Waterfall. This scenic trail winds through tropical forest rich in ferns, towering trees, and jungle vines. On arrival, take time to relax by the falls, swim in the cool natural pool, or stand beneath the cascading water for a revitalising jungle shower. The site is peaceful and often shaded, making it an ideal place to connect with the natural environment.

As dusk approaches, return to your lodge and prepare for an overland wildlife drive. This is one of the best times to spot nocturnal creatures beginning to stir from their daytime resting places. The forest slowly transitions from day to night, and your guide will help scan the shadows for movement and eye-shine using spotlights. Possible sightings include flying squirrels, nightjars, palm civets, and other elusive creatures.

After dinner at the resort, take a quiet night walk along the trails near the lodge. With your guide’s help, look for sleeping birds, tree frogs, owls, and other wildlife that thrives in the dark. The night walk offers an intimate perspective on the rainforest’s hidden life and rounds out a full day of immersive nature experiences in Tabin Wildlife Reserve.
